In the 1700s, location, economic status, and what was in season had a major impact on diet. Whereas a wealthy family would have different types of meat, fish and vegetables, along with bread, sweets and beverages such as beer or wine, the poor diet consisted mainly of bread, with the possibility of stew. Meat, due to its expense, was a rare treat for peasant families.
