Breakfast for the poor was bread and tea, some ate what they could find in trash cans. Secondhand food markets sold groceries and meats that were sometimes rotten. Some restaurants along the docks sold food that was left over from other people's plates in fancy restaurants. They made stew and soups that were sold for .15 cents a portion. Hot soup was free in a soup kitchen. Fast food 1890's style was sold on the street and you could buy oysters, buns, pretzels, hot spiced ginger bread, berries, Oranges, baked Pears, Italian ices, and German sausages. The first cold cereals came out in 1895 and in 1896 the first bagel was baked in NY. The rich ate a lot. They would start dinner with a platter of oysters, then turtle soups, a fish dish, a whole hen in cream sauce, salad, vegetables and a sweet dessert like ice cream served in fancy shapes or pears cooked in wine and sugar in an apricot sauce.
