The Beatles are the #1 recording act of all time. In 8 short years they accomplished more than any other artists. They have the most pop/rock #1 hits with 20 on the Billboard charts and 22 on the Cashbox charts in the US. They have the most #1 hits in most countries too. The Beatles have 19 #1 albums more than any other artists. They also have sold more records than any other artist at 1.3 billion plus. Their songs are the most covered by other artists. The Beatles are in the rock 'n roll hall of fame as are John, Paul and George solo. They are in the song writers hall of fame and the vocal group hall of fame. They were voted #1 all time by their peers in Rolling Stone magazine, Entertainment Weekly, VH-1 and Variety magazine named them the Icons of the 20th century. 31 years after they broke up they had a #1 album that to date has sold over 36 million records and was #1 in 35 countries. They are the only artists to have the top 5 positions in the charts on the same week. If you read or watch any rock history book or film you will find that not only did they change music but the world too.

20#1 hits

19 #1 albums

123 weeks at number one spot on Billboard

After 40 years the Beatles still hold many records, here is a partial list:

-The Beatles are the best-selling musical act of all time, estimated by EMI to have over 1.3 billion discs and tapes sold worldwide.

-The Beatles have notched up the most multi-platinum selling albums for any artist or musical group (thirteen in the U.S. alone).

-The Beatles have a record six diamond-selling albums (10 million copies)

-The Beatles have had more number one albums than any other act (19 in the U.S. and 15 in the United Kingdom).

-The Beatles spent the highest number of weeks at number one in the albums chart (174 in the UK and 132 in the U.S.).

-The most successful first week of sales for a double album (The Beatles Anthology Volume 1, which sold 855,473 copies in the U.S.)

-The Beatles have the fastest selling CD of all time with 1. It sold over 13 million copies in four weeks.

--Their greatest accomplishments however are not seen but heard. They virtually invented every musical idea in popular music. Whether not wanting to or not being aware of it..........every artist since has not escaped their musical landscape. Of course this is just my opinion.

The Beatles took popular music to a level that surpassed even Elvis, they started what was known as 'the British invasion' of the American pop charts along with bands like The Rolling Stones.

They were pioneers in musical experimentation being the first band to use techniques such as guitar feedback and reverse tracking and were the first band to use non-western instruments in their music.

In using promotional videos to get their songs out to an international audience they also invented the music video as we now know it.

Their music influenced and continues to influence bands and artists from all genres.

As social activists as well they were pioneers. George Harrison's concert for Bangladesh was one of the first charity events of its type.

The Beatles were a huge part of a new wave of youth culture which was unprecedented at the time. This youth culture defined the 1960's a sense of emancipation from authority and establishment. This manifested itself in war protests, civil rights movements and other acts of political dissent.

the legacy of the beatles:

The Beatles' influence on popular culture was---and remains---immense. Former Rolling Stone associate editor Robert Greenfield said, "People are still looking at Picasso ... at artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original. In the form that they worked in, in the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive."[231] From the 1920s, the United States had dominated popular entertainment culture throughout much of the world, via Hollywoodmovies, jazz, the music of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley and, later, the rock and roll that first emerged in Memphis, Tennessee.[268] The Beatles not only triggered the British Invasion of the US, but themselves became a globally influential phenomenon.[269]

Their musical innovations, as well as their commercial success, inspired musicians worldwide.[269] A large number of artists have acknowledged them as an influence, or have had chart successes with covers of Beatles songs.[270] On radio, their arrival marked the beginning of a new era; program directors like Rick Sklar of New York's WABC went so far as to forbid DJs from playing any "pre-Beatles" music.[271] The Beatles redefined the album as something more than just a few hits padded out with "filler".[272] They were primary innovators of the music video.[273] The Shea Stadium date with which they opened their 1965 North American tour attracted what was then the largest audience in concert history and is seen as a "landmark event in the growth of the rock crowd."[274] Emulation of their clothing and especially their hairstyles, which became a mark of rebellion, had a global impact on fashion.[78]

The Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and experienced its role in their lives.[275] From what began as the Beatlemania fad, the group grew to be perceived by their young fans across the industrialized world as the representatives, even the embodiment, of ideals associated with cultural transformation.[275] As icons of the 1960s counterculture, they became a catalyst for bohemianism and activism in various social and political arenas, fuelling such movements as women's liberation, gay liberation and environmentalism.[275]

Did buddy holly influence the Beatles?

There is no clear evidence that Buddy Holly was an influence on the Beatles since they did not record any of his songs. The Beatles would appear to have been more influenced by Chuck Berry. Still, Buddy Holly was one of the great early rock and roll stars, and it would be logical to think that he must have had at least some influence on all the rock and roll musicians who came after him, including the Beatles.
