The more fortunate slaves worked in the household of wealthy Egyptians. They cooked, served, cleaned, washed clothes, made beer or entertained the family as dancers, musicians and acrobats. Through loyal service these household slaves could hope someday to be granted their freedom.
Some slaves were made to work on the land of a noble or temple. An educated slave often enjoyed high status looking after his master's affairs perhaps owning land and slaves himself.
Slaves also served in the army.
Others were not so fortunate. They toiled digging canals, building monuments and temples, in the quarries or worst of all being worked to death in the mines. They were naked and endured harsh treatment at the hands of their overseers.
