The 1862 Homestead Act offered 160 acre tracts of public land for a twelve dollar registration and filing fee. If a homesteader stayed on the land five years , built a home and farmed the land, only an additional fee of six dollars was required to gain full title to the land.
This quarter-section could be added to an existing homestead claim, offering a total of 320 acres to a settler.
