The Umayyad dynasty came to power in 661 AD, under Muawiya ibn Abu Sufian, who was previously the governor of Syria. He shifted the capital to Damacus, a city of historical importance. During this period the Islamic nation was been enlarged to include India in the east to south France in the west. The Umayyad Dynasty period is noted for the expansion of Muslims territories across North Africa, Europe, and Asia. Bukhra and Samarkand came under Umayyad rule, and Mohammad-bin-Qasim, the Arabs invaded Sindh and captured lands up to Multan. There was greater activity on sea than on land; Constantinople was conqured by an Arab fleet, as were the islands of Sicily and Rhodes. These and later victories at sea brought Muawiya the credit for building up Muslims naval power. Its government survived for almost a century. The Umayyad period was notable development in all fields. This period ended with the Abbasids in 750.

The Umayyad Dynasty is the greatest Dynasty in the history of the Islam in terms of accomplishments. it's significant is greatest for people of the levant despite their religion, followed by General Arabs, followed by the Islamic Nations.

Umayyads can't be thought of as Prussians of Arabia, there was a strong determined militarized secular empire, based on Racial ideas.

They Stabilized the control of Arab invasion over vast nations, by making Arabic the official language, introducing one Arabic Currency for all conquered nations, and establishing a strong connection of postal routes, roads, and Arab communities throughout the Empire. not to mention that they have expanded the territories of Arab-governed nations to span from Spain to China. without them, Arab invasions would have become like any Nomadic raid that never leaves anything behind.

Umayyad practiced a fair degree of religious tolerance, but they weren't as open minded when it came to race, and they only leaders and officials of their Empire were Arabs.

The Umayyad are the most appreciated and respected Dynasty by Middle Eastern Christians and Jews while they fare very low with Shia, and nonArab Muslims especially Persians, Pakistanis, Turks, Mongols, and other Asian Muslims because they were treated like 2nd class citizens by the Umayyads.

There is some historic evidence that despite their Arab imperialistic nationalism, the Umayyads are not Arab themselves. and that Umayyads were dependents of a white Roman slave called Umayya (Umayya in Arabic means a slave), that was later adopted by a Great Arab Chieftain for what he saw in him. a belief shared By Shia and Muʿtazilah Muslims. In fact, Umayyad Rulers built a great deal of their empire's structure on the Roman model, invited a lot of Roman soldiers with their families to settle in areas of Syria, and many of them had fair skin and red hair; which suggests some truth to such allegation.

A policy of continuous expansion, reaching its maximum extent under al-Walid I (r. 705-15), brought northwest Africa, Spain, western India, and portions of Central Asia into the Islamic empire and added greatly to Umayyad wealth. This expansion was the result of an efficient Syrian army and a powerful navy. The Umayyad period was characterized by Arabization--the spread and intermarriage of Arabs with native peoples and the adoption of Arabic as the common language within the empire.
