She had a heart-shaped face (that is, her chin was a little pointed). She had curly bangs and her long hair (blonde or brunette) was pulled into a ponytail. She wore a strapless black-and-white knit swimsuit, white cat-eye sunglasses, and black heels.

There are two possible answers to your question.

1. There were prototypes made in 1957 and 1958. There is no documentation as to what Mattel did with them--if they were thrown away, or employees took them home, or if collectors have been able to find them.

2. The Number 1 Barbie doll was introduced to the public at Toy Fair in March 1959, and appeared on store shelves that summer. There were 350,000 Number 1 Barbies sold. It is unknown as to how many still survive, whether they are still with their original owners or have been purchased by collectors.
