Clothes, mostly. Men word trousers, shirts and suit jackets, over jockey shorts or briefs. Women wore skirts and dresses, with blouses. (At least in 'western' culture). In western culture, nearly all men wore hats. Check out a movie from those days (if it was set in the 40's) for an example. People generally dressed more 'formally' than they do now, especially in public. Exercise wear, stretch capris, sandals, Baseball caps, etc were not seen in public (unless you were playing baseball, for the latter). Generally, women would not dream of going out of the house without makeup and jewelry, and men never wore their pants down around their asses. In some ways, modern dress has degenerated quite a bit.
