Both the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) are self-financing educational institutions. The CBSE and the ICSE have a different syllabus, education pattern, exams and other aspects.

One of the differences that can be noticed is that the Indian government has recognised CBSE, but has not recognised the ICSE. Though the certificate given by both the institutions are valid globally, the CBSE certificate has more value than the one of ICSE.

When talking about the syllabus, the CBSE has a more scientific approach. The whole syllabus is divided into several units. In each unit, is also specified the number of periods that are needed for completion. The syllabus also includes the amount of marks in each unit. The ICSE does not have such a scientific approach. Unlike the ICSE syllabus, the CBSE syllabus helps the teachers and students to plan for the exams in a more scientific way.

Moreover, the ICSE syllabus is considered to be heavy when compared to the CBSE. While the ICSE has two papers on English, the CBSE has only one paper. The ICSE has three papers in the science group (physics, chemistry and Biology), but the CBSE has only one paper. In social studies as well, the ICSE has two papers, geography and history, while the CBSE has only one Social Sciences paper. Another difference that can be seen, is that Environmental Education is compulsory with ICSE. On the contrary, it is not so with the CBSE.

In terms of the exam pattern, the entrance examinations follow the CBSE. This means that those students studying ICSE have a disadvantage when taking competitive exams, unlike the CBSE students.

Unlike the ICSE, the CBSE syllabi are frequently upgraded. The CBSE has a "Front Line Curriculum" concept that upgrades the syllabi with more relevant materials.

Anogther difference that can be seen between the CBSE and the ICSE, is that a large number of schools have affiliated with the CBSE, but not with the ICSE. Moreover, the CBSE Board allows regular and private candidates to take the exams. On the other hand, ICSE will not allow students who have not been studying in ICSE affiliated schools to take exams.

NIOS is equivalent to other boards like CBSE and ICSE. The only difference is that it is open schooling as compared to the regular classroom concept that other boards have. It is recognized at the same level.

There are several well documented advantages to a quality ICSE education, including the following:

1. Higher Standard of Teachers: Teachers have to specifically train for ICSE teaching.

2. Higher Standard of Graduating Students: Student internal evaluation is monitored / tracked better. The stress on project work helps students improve their learning skills of researching, presentation, etc. And the grading system is more holistic as work done in school gets accounted for through internal evaluations and final scores are not just based on the final examination papers. This results in students getting overall higher scores than the SSC board.

3. Superior Syllabus: There are clear guidelines of syllabus (scope) for board examinations and the overall content of the ICSE syllabus gives students a broader perspective. It is therefore considered superior when compared to SSC in the preparation of external and competitive examinations for higher education. The ICSE board gives the school and students a greater choice & flexibility of subjects allowing the school the flexibility to offer subjects based on infrastructure and student profile - e.g. students with difficulty in languages can drop that language and take another subject.

4. Greater Autonomy: Indian Government department officials play less of a role in the day to day management of the school. Guidelines and regulations are sent in English.

5. Better Infrastructure: There are clear ICSE guidelines required for affiliation.

6. At par with the best schools in India: Students will have the same standard as all other well reputed ICSE schools in India. This is an advantage if students go out of the state for their College/University education.

What I've heard is that IGCSE syllabus includes teaching hands on. The 3-hour exam is split into two 1 1/2 hour exams. The method of teaching is more application oriented. The syllabus is oriented to improve mental/thinking/creative abilities of students whereas ICSE and CBSE have more of a theoretical approach. The only problem is that it's very difficult to see, before putting your kids in a specific school, if such school is equipped with such qualified teachers. Nowadays many schools are starting to offer IGCSE whether or not they have proper infrastructure available, mostly because there is more inflow of funds in the form of tuition fee.

IGCSE syllabus targets students to apply for universities in western countries after 12th grade. The issue with IGCSE is that the final exams are in May and their results are declared in August. This is cumbersome since most competitive exams for State Engineering/Medical colleges, IITs, and BITS take place in May. Therefore, kids who have taken IGCSE won't be able to take such competitive exams and won't be able to secure merit seats. For them, the only option would be to pay donation and join colleges under management quota if they decide to stay in India.

Unless the system assures the students somehow to be able to apply for/secure merit seats in Indian undergraduate colleges, it's not pragmatic for students to take up IGCSE.

However, more recently(2014), IGCSE has introduced an additional March exam schedule for India (in addition to regular October and May schedules). Check with affiliated schools if they allow students to take exams in March.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) 2010

Introduction

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognized qualification, taken at the Class 10 level, similar to the Class 10 examinations of the CBSE and ICSE or the middle years Program of the IB. IGCSE, formed in 1988, is a comprehensive two-year program, spread over Class 9 and 10, and leads to the final examinations offered every year in May and November. IGCSE assessment is conducted by two UK assessment bodies: Edexcel (also known as London Examinations) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) A student who has passed IGCSE is eligible for any +2 level qualifications, like Class 12 CBSE/ ICSE or any international pre-university program, like the IB Diploma, Advanced Placement Diploma (US), and A/AS Level & AICE (UK). (Courtesy - rediff.com).

Comparison of IGCSE to other programmes like CBSE, ICSE or the Middle Years Programme of the IB

  • Like other modern programmes, IGCSE offers a wider range of subjects and encourages high academic standards through a practical approach to teaching and learning. Assessment is not limited to conventional written papers and they consist of a variety of tests e.g. oral and listening tests.
  • The assessment is aimed at a wide ability range of students, with an eight-point grading scale, from A+ to G, with A+ being the highest.
  • IGCSE is a balanced curriculum and a flexible course of study.
  • Most subjects offer a choice between core curriculum and extended curriculum.
  • This gives students of all ability levels the freedom to choose subjects that are right for them and, thereby, the opportunity to score good grades.
  • The core curriculum is an overview of the subject and is suitable for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G.
  • The extended curriculum is, sort of, a specialisation in that subject. It is more challenging and designed for students who are expected to achieve grades A+ to C.
  • While the syllabi and curricula of both IB MYP and IGCSE have an international outlook, IGCSE appears to be slightly better, in that it is tailored for a more multi-cultural and more multi-lingual audience.
  • Does the IGCSE start only in Class 9? What about the primary years? Can a student do IGCSE after completing his/ her earlier schooling through a different board?
  • Currently, IGCSE is a two-year programme starting at the Class 9 level. A student who has done his/ her early schooling from any other board can join the IGCSE programme at the Class 9 level.

Subjects in the IGCSE Curriculum

There are five Subject Groups in IGCSE with several subjects to choose from, in each group:

  • Group 1: Languages (First Language, Second Language, Foreign Language, etc)
  • Group 2: Humanities and Social Sciences (Geography, English Literature, History, etc)
  • Group 3: Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc)
  • Group 4: Mathematics (Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, etc)
  • Group 5: Creative, Technical & Vocational (Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Music, etc)

For each subject, the certificate merely indicates the grades scored, and not pass or fail.

Five scores of 'C' or higher indicates a students readiness to pursue +2 level qualifications, like the Class 12 CBSE, IB Diploma, Advanced Placement Diploma (US), etc.

International Certificate of Education (ICE)

The ICE is more prestigious than the standard IGCSE.

Instead of the five papers needed to obtain the IGCSE, if a student attempts and passes seven or more papers, s/he is awarded the ICE.

The seven subjects must be as follows:

  • Two subjects from the language group
  • One from each of the other four groups
  • One more from any of the five groups

Resons to Select IGCSE

  1. IGCSE is one of the most sought-after and recognised qualifications in the world. It develops and encourages vital educational skills, including oral skills, investigative skills, problem solving, team work, recall of knowledge, and initiative.
  2. The IGCSE programme has worldwide status and credibility. In India, the course is delivered in over 130 schools with the number expected to touch 600 by 2008. It is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as being at par with CBSE, ICSE, etc. Worldwide, it is delivered in schools in over 140 countries and is recognised by colleges and universities everywhere, more so in the UK and other Commonwealth countries.
  3. The IGCSE curriculum is balanced and lends an international perspective to studies. It also takes account of differing abilities of students.
  4. IGCSE students can take advantage of the Cambridge Checkpoint, a diagnostic service comprising of standardised tests, that pin-points a student's strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas.

Edexcel and CIE

Edexcel is the UK's largest academic qualifications awarding body.

It was formed in 1996 by the merger of two well-respected bodies, BTEC (the Business & Technology Education Council), and ULEAC (the University of London Examinations and Assessment Council).

In 2003, Edexcel merged with the education giant, Pearson PLC, to set up a new company called Edexcel Limited, which is 75% owned by Pearson and 25% by the Edexcel Foundation.

CIE is the international division of University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

UCLES is another UK-based academic qualifications awarding body, known for its professional, rigorous and high standard assessments.

UCLES is a department of the University of Cambridge, which was formed in the year 1907, and is one of the oldest and most reputed universities in the world.

What is a Cambridge International Centre? What is an Edexcel Centre or a London Examinations Centre?

Schools that are accredited to Edexcel or CIE for the conduct of the IGCSE programme are known as Edexcel Centres or Cambridge International Centres.

From parents' or students' perspective, there is little difference between the two.

Some schools are accredited to Edexcel and some to CIE. For example, DPS International in Delhi is an Edexcel IGCSE centre, while the Pathways World School in Gurgaon is a CIE IGCSE centre.

Then there are some like Calcutta International School in Kolkata and British School in Delhi, which are centres of both Edexcel and CIE.

More than the assessment body, parents need to think about which school is better for their child.

Some prominent IGCSE schools in India are:

West India

  • Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai -- Day school
  • Ecole Mondiale World School, Mumbai -- Day school
  • Ahmedabad International School, Ahmedabad -- Day School
  • Riverdale International School, Pune -- Residential school

North India

  • DPS International School, Delhi -- Day school
  • Pathways World School, Gurgaon -- Residential school
  • Woodstock School, Mussoorie -- Residential school
  • G D Goenka World School, Gurgaon -- Mixed (both Boarding and Day)

South India

  • The International School of Bangalore, Bangalore -- Mixed (both Boarding and Day)
  • Good Shepherd International School, Ooty -- Residential school
  • Indus International School, Bangalore -- Residential school
  • Parkwood School International, Hyderabad -- Residential school

East India

  • Calcutta International School, Kolkata -- Day school

Conclusion

Well, the IGCSE curriculum might not have gained that much ground as its other counterparts like state boards, CBSE, ICSE, etc. But since its inception, it has managed to provide a quality based priority education to its students. However, the IGCSE is famous all over and alone in India the number of schools affiliated is set to touch a magical figure of 1000 soon. The student community is opting for the same because IGCSE students can take advantage of the Cambridge Checkpoint, a diagnostic service comprising of standardized tests, that pin-point a student's strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas.

Raj Vedanta School

Raj Vedanta School (RVS) offers the nationally recognized curriculum of ICSE ( The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education). Students learn through inquiry-based instruction that is tailored to students' needs. Students develop a love for learning and sound judgment. Ultimately, we provide our graduates with a framework for understanding the world and the skills to succeed in it.

ICSE syllabus has the upper hand when it comes to practical knowledge while the CBSE syllabus is only better for theoretical knowledge. The students interested in computer fields have a plus point in studying ICSE schools since programming starts from STD 4. whereas CBSE students remain stuck in word office, excel, etc. which is of no use.

The ICSE syllabus has more internal assessments and concepts that can be applied to practicals. The grading system for CBSE is alphabetical based. For ICSE, the marks are shown in numbers, which gives students a clear idea of how much they have scored.

ICSE certified are recognized and followed across the globe, especially by foreign schools and universities compared to CBSE certificates.
