Special Project Assistants do not have a nickname. However, besides being called a Special Project Assistant, contributors in the program are called SPA.

The Special Project Assistants Active Alumni was started on December 20, 2011 and that is when the badges were starting to be given out.
What is the primary difference between a Special Project Assistant and a Community Assistant?
The primary difference between a Special Project Assistant and a Community Assistant is that a SPA is a volunteer contributor and a CA is part of the Answers.com Community Development staff, who help facilitate the website. What super powers do the SPAs on WikiAnswers have?
The SPA's (aka Special Project Assistants), have really no super powers. All they do is help improve answers, help recat questions, answer questions, and make new questions. The Special Project Assistants are what the name says, assistants to Special Projects.

Special Project Assistants do not gain any additional tools that regular contributors do not have.

Can you lock questions when you're a Special Project Assistant?
No, unless you are a supervisor enrolled in the SPA program. Most Special Project Assistants are only normal contributors and can not lock questions because this is a feature only supervisors can do.
Are there any promotions for Special Project Assistants?
Yes, a lot of Special Project Assistants go on to become Supervisors. The aim of the programme is to give its members enough information about the site and its tools to go on to become Supervisors! Once they have become Supervisors, SPAs are welcome to stay part of the programme and can join the SPA Active Alumni!!

There are currently just over 500 SPAs, although the number of members changes all the time!
