So the cushions, benches, mats, and other supports used by Zen Buddhists make it easier to sit with the hips higher than the knees. The two knees and the buttocks provide a tripod that is a solid base for sitting erectly. In terms of stilling the mind once the body is stilled, there are different methods used such as counting the breaths, simply following the breath, or koan training. The idea is to let thoughts settle down until the mind is still.
