Christians generally bury their dead while some have the body burned to ashes (Cremation) which are either spread somewhere or placed in a container, usually an urn.

The Christian tradition of burying the dead is a tradition followed through the world, especially of the Western peoples.

The specifics of burials and funerals all come from particular reasons:

- The bodies/corpses are put in caskets to keep the body from animals and the elements and such.

- The caskets are made of wood because the vast majority of people from earlier times did not have the wealth or access to anything else.

- The caskets, bodies were placed 6 feet under to keep them safe from scavengers and the elements.

- Each denomination does their own thing at funerals but it does not differ to differently than so: The body is prepared for three days, hen a viewing is held, where relatives and friends can come see and pay last respects to the deceased. Then a funeral takes place where a small ceremony is held and the body is then placed into the ground/vault where it remains till judgment day.

- In ground burial sights are the norm but as people, especially those in America, had more access to wealth and other means of internment over time, some burial sights that have become popular over the years are small stone or concrete houses/vaults where the casket is sealed within on a central stone pedestal or on a ledge in the wall. The ledge on a wall is actually a very ancient means of internment used in Roman days in the Catacombs under the city of Rome. Another recent burial style is an above ground wall where individual caskets are deposited over time. The wall almost resembles a library shelf where, instead of books, caskets are slid in place.

The Baptist Christians use the symbol of burial in Baptism. A saved or converted individual will have a church's Pastor or Decon/Elder immerse them in water and then bring them back up. This is a picture of Christ's death, burial and resurrection.

Another intricate part of this whole process of someone dying is mourning. Mourning is the emotional outcry/response of pain when someone fells the loss of another soul. It is completely natural and normal for one to feel sorrow at a loss of a loved one.

Sorrow and morning can be expressed in many different ways; Most cry and weep, some try to ignore or cover up the pain and seem from the outside to be either cold or unfeeling, but this is simply their emotional/psychological response to the intense pain of loss. Some laugh in an attempt to keep from an unwanted emotional breakdown. In short, people, each individually try and cope with pain in their own way. But Mourning, is why viewings and funerals take place. It allows those still living to work through the mental processes of death. For we must all face death, and in our society, the process of the funeral allows us to cope.

Funerals are world wide though, with each culture using its own forms of mourning and burial and cremation.

In roman catholic tradition "last rites" are administered by a priest to a person who is very ill and near death. The ritual takes place as, or similar to, the following:

  • The priest hears the dying persons last confession of sin.
  • The person will then recite the Apostles Creed:

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

  • The priest and the person will then recite the "Our Father" prayer:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

  • The Eucharist (communion, blood and body of Christ) is then administered by the priest. The Eucharist is called Viaticum when given to a dying person. The word means provision for the journey.
  • The ritual is concluded by prayer and blessing from the priest.
