I.V's may be used for different reasons. Hydration is big. To have an open line for medications also. It may be used to balance your electrolytes. It may be used for many other reasons. Total I.V. feeding is used on a short term basis for people who are unable to eat, or have tube feeds. It gives your body nutrients that are essential to survival.
