Guinea pigs are not nocturnal neither do they sleep at night always. They are most active at dawn and dusk. When you see a guinea pig laying or sitting still with their eyes open, they may be sleeping. Guinea pigs can sleep with their eyes open. I think they just take a lot of naps and can be awake and playing at almost any time if they are given enough resting time on the side.
