Most commonly, Protestants believe that when a person dies, his soul goes to heaven where he or she is judged by God according to how that person lived on earth. If the person lived a wicked life, or didn't have sufficient faith in God or Jesus, that person's soul is sent to hell where it suffers an eternity of pain and suffering. Those who are judged faithful and good, on the other hand, remain in heaven where they live in bliss for eternity.

In some Protestant denominations, it is believed that the soul doesn't actually depart the body until the events described in Saint John's Revelation take place. At that time, they will be judge on their spiritual merits and either join the warhost of God or are cast to hell where they are made soldiers in Satan's army in preparation for the final battle to take place between Heaven and Hell set off by the second coming of Jesus on earth.

A few progressive Protestant denominations believe when the body dies, the soul immediately rejoins the spiritual essence of God from which it came like a drop of water rejoining the ocean. No judgment takes place because God is all forgiving and there is no hell.

Do protestants believe in the cross?

Yes. Protestants were a group of believers who split from the Catholic church. I believe the split was due to traditions and belief held by the church of old. These days, most Christians believe the same thing, even if they worship differently - that is that Christ was and is truly the son of God. That faith includes a belief in the cross.
