What do shamans have to undergo to become shamans?

Answer:
The majority of Shamans are either born into the role, or they are called into it.

A "calling" may involve a serious illness (mental or physical), during which they realise, or are informed of their calling. Once they accept the calling, the illness is said to disappear. Having survived this terrible malady, they are said to be Shaman, and able to journey to the underworld on behalf of others to wrestle with the spirits that trouble them.
