The related article from Ear, Nose, & Throat Associates of Corpus Christi really explains it well. According to them and the Sinus Wars site:

  • They lighten the weight of the skull and this is the reason why your head feels heavy and you feel tired and sleepy during a sinus attack.
  • They give resonance to your voice.
  • They also filter and moisten the air that we breathe.
  • They also remove unwanted air particles.

There are two easy to explain reasons we have sinuses: The first is to lighten the weight of the skull. If the skull were solid, our neck would not be able to hold it upright. Secondly, the sinuses play a role in speech. They are, in effect, resonating chambers to help create our voice timbre and pitch.
