The Marine Corps is defined as a 'force in readiness' and stands as the first responders to an executive order. Unlike the United States Army, the Marine Corps is geared to be a smaller, lighter, faster attack force. The Marine Corps specializes in amphibious assaults and in conjunction with the United States Navy, provides an unparalleled capability to project power from the sea.
The basis for Marine Corps attack strategy is built on the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). This allows for full dominance of a battle space (air, ground, sea and space) and essentially gives geographical commanders an all inclusive, self-sustaining attack force.
In the simplest of terms, the Marine Corps is generally considered an immediate response force, capable of overwhelming the enemy. Whereas the Army, is better suited for engaging in conflict over a longer term, while consuming more resources with more personnel, heavier equipment and wider spectrum of ground combat operations.
