Obviously, there are also plenty of fanciful, pseudo-poetic ideas about the colors.

The colors on the German flag are black, red and yellow. They can be traced back to the medieval banner of the Holy Roman Emperor from about 1402-1806. The three equal bands of red, black and gold consisted of a black double-headed eagle with red claws on a bright golden ground. The golden background is associated with the myth that the eagle can stare at the sun

In 1813 the black-red-gold flag was adopted by some young German nationalists in Luetzow's Freikorps fighting against Napoleon . It became the flag of (liberal) German nationalism of 1815-49 and was widely used by the revolutionaries of 1848-49.

The flag of the first German Republic, the Weimar Republic of 1919-1933, was black-red-gold, but conservatives didn't accept it as the true German flag. They demanded the 1871 black-white-red flag - which the Nazis reinstated in a modified form in 1933.

Other descriptions describe the meaning of the colors as Black for determination, Red for hardiness, valor, strength and bravery, and Yellow for generosity.

These colors are derived from the similar colors of the Imperial coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire.

The colours on the German flag since 1949 are black-red-gold. These were the colours of: 1. The flag of the Holy Roman Empire from about 1402-1806. (The flag consisted of a black double- headed eagle with red claws on a bright golden ground. The golden background is associated with the myth that the eagle could stare at the sun). For a long time the red colouring of the claws was optional. 2. In 1813 the black-red-gold flag was adopted by some young German nationalists in Luetzow's Freikorps fighting against Napoleon . It became the flag of (liberal) German nationalism of 1815-49 and was widely used by the revolutionaries of 1848-49. 3. The flag of the first German Republic, the Weimar Republic of 1919-1933, was black-red-gold, but conservatives didn't accept it as the true German flag. They demanded the 1871 black-white-red flag - which the Nazis reinstated in a modified form in 1933.

The colors black, red and gold have been associated with Germany since the middle ages, but the current German flag colors are traced back to early 19th century volunteers, who fought for the country in the Napoleonic wars. The colors are based on the soldiers' uniforms which were black coats with red braid and gold buttons.

Germany's modern flag has three equal horizontal bands of black, red and gold, which are the country's national colors. Sometimes the three colors are associated with the three principles "unity, law and freedom" which are stated in the text of Germany's national anthem. Historically, the three colors originate from the uniform colors (black fabric with red decorations, gold-colored brass buttons) of the Lützow Free Corps, a military unit fighting for Prussia in the liberation wars against Napoleon in the early 19th century. The members of this corps were volunteers, usually university students. They later took over these colors as the colors of their patriotic student corps. Black, red and gold was first shown on a flag on the first Wartburg festival in 1817, at this time still in reverse order, representing the student corps' principles "honor, freedom, home country".

As a national flag, it was first used by the Frankfurt Parliament after the 1848 revolution.

The "National Socialists" replaced the national colors by black, white and red, usually adorned with the swastica symbol. The German Tricolor flag was re-established in both German states after the end of World War II.

Black-white-red were the colours of the flag of Imperial Germany (1871-1918) and of Nazi Germany. In the Weimar Republic the colours were black-red-gold and these have been the colours of the Federal Republic of Germany since its foundation in 1949.
