Answer

The colors were first used in the 19th century during the struggle for the unification of the many German (independent) states into a more democratic construct of a nation. In a poem it is called the dark night (presence with small states, a lot of borders within Germany, powerful autocrats and no citizen rights), the red morning (the idea of a better future, the ideals of the young, the struggle) and the golden light (the future of a united Germany where all Germans together can work for the better in the country). Later was freedom added to the symbols. The flags of the President and the Chancellor have an eagle in the middle due to the heraldic history of German flags.

They represent the colors worn by the fraternity students, and other members of the volunteer "German" army that helped defeat a retreating Napoleon during the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. Before this time, the idea of a unified German nation was nothing more than an idealistic dream; however, the heroism of the volunteers from the different states accelerated the creation of the German state.

Answer

The colours on the German flag since 1949 have been black-red-gold. These were the colours of:

1. The flag of the Holy Roman Empire from about 1402-1806. (The flag consisted of a black double-headed eagle with red claws on a bright golden ground. The golden background is associated with the myth that the eagle can stare at the sun). For a long time the red colouring of the claws was optional.

2. In 1813 the black-red-gold flag was adopted by some young German nationalists in Luetzow's Freikorps fighting against Napoleon . It became the flag of (liberal) German nationalism of 1815-49 and was widely used by the revolutionaries of 1848-49.

3. The flag of the first German republic, the Weimar Republic of 1919-1933, was black-red-gold, but conservatives didn't accept it as the true German flag. They demanded the 1871 black-white-red flag - which the Nazis reinstated in a modified form in 1933.
