The song has nothing to do with death. It is about unrequited love. The lonliness and heartbreak of not having the one you want with you, which intensifies at night when you are alone and thinking and hoping and fantasizing. Beautiful song. When I was little I thought it was "KNIGHTS in White Satin" and attributed the lyrics to mean something entirely different, much more romantic.
