They are poppies, every year in October and November on the run up to Remembrance Sunday (the closest Sunday to Armistice Day on Nov 11) millions are sold by a veterans charity called The Royal British Legion to raise funds to help ex-servicemen.

Since their introduction in 1921 they have become a symbol of remembrance for those who fought and died for our country.

The Poppy was chosen because during the first world war in the battlefields of France , poppies grew amongst the devastation where soldiers had fallen, their bright colour standing out against the scorched land.

It is also used as a symbol of remembrance in Canada and New Zealand.
