What do the two guards do in basketball?

Answer

A normal basketball lineup includes two guards: the Point Guard and the Shooting Guard. Basketball positions are sometimes referred to by number, with the Point Guard being number 1 and the Shooting Guard being number 2, and sometimes referred to as the 2 guard.

The point guard's main job is to bring the ball down the court, call the play, and then pass the ball to a teammate. Sometimes the point guard will be able to draw defenders to himself to free up a teammate. Generally the point guard is responsible for getting his teammates into the game, and for directing the offense.

The shooting guard, as the name implies, is more responsible for hitting outside shots.

All basketball players have to shoot, pass, rebound, and defend.

Great point guards include "pure" point guards like Steve Nash who excel at the duties specific to a Point Guard, and players like Magic Johnson who were also great rebounders and scorers. Similarly, great shooting guards included guys like Allan Houston who were great shooters, and guys like Michael Jordan who were even better known for other skills such as driving to the basket, rebounding, and playing great defense.
