Northern Cyprus is like Turkey in most respects including drinking. While drinking is against Islamic Law, a large percentage of Turkish Cypriots drink. Zivania and Raki are the most common forms of hard liquor, but wine and beer are also very common. In terms of non-alcoholic drinks, Ayran (a yogurt-like drink) and citrus juices are quite common.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn't a big culture of alcohol drinking in Cyprus- most local alcohols are sold mainly for the tourist industry, although Cypriot men do enjoy a beer.

The beers brewed on the island are Keo in the Greek South, and Efes in the Turkish North. Carlsberg beer, although a Danish brew, is very popular in Cyprus and is imported in large quantity. There is also a strong spirit called Ouzo, that has a sweetish aniseed-like taste and is usually mixed with water (it turns cloudy when water is added). Another even stronger spirit, called Zivouni which is 45% proof, is also sold in Cyprus but isn't specifically Cypriot, being just as common in Greece as well. Cypriot wine is usually dry white, Alkion being the most popular one.

But for most of the time, Cypriots prefer non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee; in the North, Turkish coffee is sold, brewed in small brass pots and served in espresso-sized cups. It's very strong. Tea is not so popular; when it is drunk, it's served Russian-style, without milk or sugar but with a slice of lemon in a tall glass. The most popular drink of all is simple bottled mineral water, as Cyprus is so hot for much of the year and water is the best fluid for rehydration! Cyprus has several mineral springs and a number of water-bottling plants; water is often sold in big six-packs of 2-litre bottles, there are about three popular brands.

This isn't to say that Cypriots never get drunk- they enjoy merry-making on special festival days, and especially after football matches, when it's not uncommon to find litter bins overflowing with empty cans of Keo!!
