Solved nobrake lights CHECK ENGINE P1780Three broken wires @ driver's side trunk lid hinge. One day, dash FAULT REAR-LIGHT INDICATOR came on. Awhile later, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. Had someone push brake pedal while I checked the rear lights. Brake lights on trunk lid did not come on. That night, replaced both bulbs in parts store parking lot. Backed up to parts store window to view operating lights in reflection. It was dark so I had my lights on. When I hit the brake pedal, the lights on the trunk lid dimmed. No brake lights. The next day, in day light, I inspected the wiring @ the light sockets and visually followed the wire harness pass the hinge to where it ducks behind a side panel. Just before it ducked behind the side panel, I noticed two broken wires. At closer inspection, I noticed a third ready to break. I spliced in three new pieces of wire. One problem solved. That evening I went to AUTOZONE. The CHECK ENGINE light code was P1780. I scoured the WWW for a solution. None. Next morning, I started the car to drove to work. No CHECK ENGINE light. Another problem solved by fixing three wires?

code P1780 is for a problem with the park/neutral position switch. at least one of the wires you repaired must have been for the backup lights, the computer no longer saw the problem so it turned out the "check engine" light.
