A sarcophagus is a funeral receptacle for a corpse, most commonly carved or cut from stone. The word "sarcophagus" comes from the Greek sarx meaning "flesh", and phageinmeaning "to eat", hence sarkophagus means "flesh-eating"; from the phrase lithos sarkophagos. Since lithos is Greek for stone, lithos sarcophagos means 'flesh eating stone'. The word came to refer to a particular kind of limestone that was thought to decompose the flesh of corpses interred within it.

Well, first the Egyptian people beleived that mummifying the dead person would preserve them for the afterlife. Also, anything that they put in with the dead person would supposedly go with them to the afterlife too. Too bad most of the mummies got stolen and robbed huh?

Well, mummies don't believe in anything (per say) since they are dead bodies. But the Egyptians certainly had many beliefs about the afterlife. It is best to go to Wikipedia or to an Egyptian history website to get the details on Egyptians beliefs.
