The Hellenistic Period begins with the death of Alexander.
It's called the Hellenistic Age.
black death
The last period of ancient Greek history was the Hellenistic period, which is categorised as starting from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC as ending with the annexation of Ptolemaic Egypt in 30 BC following the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII by Octavian.
Alexander apparently received that epithet from the Romans, who admired him. The oldest surviving reference of the title is found in the Mostellaria ("The Haunted House"), a play written by Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254 - 184 BC). This is roughly a century or so after Alexander's death in 323 BC.
After Alexander the Great's death, his Macedonian generals divided his empire up amongst themselves, forming several kingdoms. Alexander had begun the process of introducing Greek (Hellenic) culture throughout the empire, which they attempted to continue on where it suited them. So Hellenic culture was spread over the previous cultures - but only a veneer so we today call it Hellenistic (partly Hellenic) rather then true/full Hellenic (Greek). As time went on the veneer wore this, and the eastern part in particular reverted to the old ways, or new cultures emerged. After 146 BCE Roman expansion began to take over the east politically, though not the culture.
Neither - the Hellenistic Age came after the deaths of Pericles, and after the death of Alexander. His successors divided his new empire amongst themselves, setting up their own kingdoms. These kingdoms had a veneer of Hellenic (Greek) culture, so we call them Hellenistic, that is a bit like Hellenic, but not fully Hellenised.
