if there isn't a clinic nearby you can always suck on it. Just make sure you don't swallow the poison. Depending on the snake, if it isn't very venomous you might just have sometime to call for help.

The general first aid for snake bites is as follows:

1.First and foremost calm down the person. Lowering the person's heart beat is crucial. Faster heart beat can result in the venom spreading faster.

2. Send for help, or decide to transport. Time can be critical here.

3. Some older authorities used to say to tie off a "snake tourniquet". This is a thin string or line that, when tied, makes a dent in the skin but does not ever impede circulation. You might consider this if rescue will be more that 2 hours away. The "tourniquet" should be loose enough to let you slip a finger between it and the skin.

4.Clean the wound with water. Disinfect if you can. If this causes pain, skip it.

5. Try to keep the person as still as possible.

6. Splint the limb to prevent movement -- without restriction circulation.

6.Remove any clothing that might obstruct or irritate the wound. Otherwise this might cause swelling.

7. Keep the limb positioned lower than the heart if possible.

8. If you can identify the species of snake, all the better. Make sure though that you don't risk getting bitten in the process. Note coloration, eyes (vertical or horizontal pupils), pattern, location.

8. Do not give the person anything to eat or drink unless rescue will take a long enough time that dehydration becomes a risk. If so, hydrate.

First tell the victim not to be panic as it will only increase the pulse rate and blood pressure which moves the venom into the body faster. Get medical assistance ASAP. The use of tourniquets or tie has both advantages and disadvantages. So use a bandage 2-4 inches above the bite. The bandage should not be tight as it could cut-off the blood flow and if venom clot forms it could be serious to death. The bandage should be loose enough to slip a finger under it.

First we need to understand snakes:1. Snakes are 'venomous' NOT 'poisonous' - Snake venom is a combination of a numerous number of proteins and enzymes. Provided I had no ulcers in my mouth or stomach, and no tooth cavities, I could safely drink a glass of snake venom.2. Snakes are more scared of us than we are of them - most snakes, when feeling the ground vibrations, will move away from the source of potential danger.3. In my country, South Africa, only 10% of our snakes are venomous.4. More times than most, a snake will lash out at the source of danger because of fear and this results in a 'Dry Bite' - venom will land on top of the site with no invenomation.TREATMENT:- After the victim receives the bite, do not try and catch the snake, but move away from it.- Ask the patient to sit down and relax.- Put some protective gloves on and talk calmly to the victim.- If possible, call Emergency Services, (USA - 911; SA - 10177/082911) and you can also call the Poison Centre.- Keep the patient calm and tell them to breath normally, don't hyperventilate.- Wash the surface venom from the skin and remove any jewelery.- Now cover the wound with a 'crape bandage', to keep infection out.... Wrap the dressing around the entire limb from distal to proximal, (from wrist/ankle towards the body. **We want the dressing to spread the venom over the entire limb, this will engage the body's own protection system, Life Sustaining Fluids, to flood the injury site which we've just made as big as possible, and these fluids will DILUTE the venom sufficiently to give you more time to get treatment.- Treat the patient for shock, (systemic, hypovolaemic, and phsychogenic shock), by covering them with a blanket, keep an eye on their vital signs, reassure them consistently and do NOT give them anything to eat or drink.

Poisonous snake bites need immediate emergency room care because you will need anti-venom to counteract the snake's poison which can spread quickly through your bloodstream.

Non-poisonous snake bites can be treated with soap and water, alcohol and an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin to be prevent infection and then cover it with a bandage. Check the area daily for any signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or pus-like drainage. If present, get yourself to a doctor.

If the snake was venomous, there is no self-help cure. You need to get medical care promptly. The faster you get to the emergency room, the better your chance of survival.A bite from a non-venomous snake should be wash thoroughly and covered with a bandage for a few days. However, if it was from a larger snake that has caused a nasty laceration, you will need to seek medical help and sutures may be required.

If you're bitten by a venomous snake:

DO stay calm.

DO call 911 and seek medical attention immediately.

DO remove any jewelry or tight clothing from the bitten area/limb right

away (you'll want it off before the wound and surrounding tissue starts

swelling).

Do NOT cut the bite site, or create any kind of tourniquet around the wound.

Do NOT put ice on the bite.

Do NOT try to suck the venom from the wound.

Do NOT treat the site with rubbing alcohol or medication.

Do NOT wait for swelling, pain or other common symptoms to manifest

themselves before going to the emergency room.
