The Order of the Arrow (OA) is Scouting's National Honor Society. Scouts are elected by their troop to join the OA if they have had fifteen nights of camping within the past two years and are First Class rank or above.Once elected to join the OA, the candidate goes through a camping weekend called the Ordeal, and in doing so becomes a member of the OA.There are three 'honors' in the OA:Ordeal Member - A scout who has completed their Ordeal. They receive a white sash with a red arrow.Brotherhood Member - A scout who, having been an Ordeal Member for at least ten months, has completed their Brotherhood Ordeal. They receive the same sash as before only with a red bar at each end of the arrow.Vigil Member - A scout who, having been Brotherhood for at least two years and provided outstanding service to the Scouting movement, has been nominated by the Lodge Vigil Committee, and then completes his Vigil Ordeal. He receives the Brotherhood sash with a special triangle design in the middle of the arrow. In the OA, the term brotherhood can also refer to the OA as a whole. This is referred to by the Lenni Lenape word for brotherhood, Wimachtendienk.
After being elected to the Order of the Arrow (OA) candidates will usually be recognized in a call out ceremony. They then participate in the Ordeal induction, intended to emphasize brotherhood, service and cheerfulness. During the induction, candidates maintain complete silence, sleep alone overnight, receive small amounts of food and perform camp work projects.* They are then welcomed as Ordeal members in a formal ceremony.*These details on the Ordeal are made public by the BSA in a fact sheet[linked] and elsewhere on the web."Physical hazing and initiations are prohibited and may not be included as part of any Scouting activity ... The BSA does not recognize any secret organizations as part of its program. All aspects of the Scouting program such as Order of the Arrow are open to observation by parents and leaders". -Youth Protection Guidelines for adult leaders and parents, Boy Scouts of America"If after discussing the ceremony with the lodge advisor, the parent, Scout leader or religious leader continues to have questions about the content of the ceremony, that person will be permitted to read the ceremony text and view the Ordeal's ceremony training DVD. Following this, parents will be in a position to decide whether to allow their son to participate in the ceremony. Nonmembers should not attend the ceremonies." -Order of the Arrow Handbook, Boy Scouts of America
The Admonition of the Order of the Arrow is expected to be kept amongst its members. It is given to candidates who experience an OA Ordeal. Likewise, there are other words of membership that are learned by members at the two additional honors of Brotherhood and Vigil Honor. Many have asked why these are so hard to find if they are not already known, and this is because those who remember them live by them, and are not likely to betray them. Those who do not care about them soon forget them.
The Order of the Arrow is a secret organization. They do not share the specifics of their ceremonies.
