What do you do if you break a stitch above your eye?

Answer:
Make sure the cut remains clean and return for follow-up care. There may be more of a scar depending on the stage of wound healing. While it would not be sutured again, butterfly closures might help to loosely approximate the wound edges for better healing if the cut is gaping. It will heal by "secondary intention," (of its own accord). Due to the many tiny blood vessels in the face, wounds in this area usually heal rapidly, but smoking constricts blood circulation to these tiny vessels and always inhibits this process.

Certain types of absorbable sutures disintegrate on their own and do not require removal. Because rapid healing of facial wounds is anticipated, and the ER patient might not return for removal, these sutures are sometimes used for minor cuts. The patient instructions should indicate if this is the case, follow-up as indicated.
