Go to Start + Control Panel + Appearance & Themes + Taskbar & Start Menu + Start Menu + Click Customize + Advanced, then look at Start Menu Items, scrool down to the search tab and see if it is checked. If not, check it and your search option will reappear. If it is checked then you have another problem.
