What do you do if your child wakes up in the middle of the night afraid?

Answer

When your child wakes up in the middle of the night of course the first thing you want to do is comfort them and reassure them The first hing I used to do was to sit on their bed with them and give them a big hug and tell them there was nothing to be afraid of and that you were always close by. If they needed futher assurance. I would get a flashlight and let them look under the bed and in the closet so they could see that nothing was there. I also took a can of room deodorizer and drew a picture of a "monster" on it and it said something like monster be gone. Then at night before bed I would spray it and yell at the "monsters" to go away and not come back because Josh wanted to go to sleep and this always seemed to work just fine. Do not let your child come to bed with you because it could be a very hard habit to break!

Answer

Add Night lights and dream catchers to room. Also "Guardian Angel" picture or poster is helpful for some children. Reassure them and talk in a soothing manner when they are scared or can't sleep. Make sure they have a regular bed time routine. Give them time to get ready for bed with story or activity such as coloring that is calming and allows them to unwind. Ask how their day went and allow them time to talk about activities. Leave closet doors open. Make the rest of the house calm and quiet.
