ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT USE ALCOHOL, PEROXIDE, OR NEOSPORIN!!!!!!!!! Peroxide and alcohol will dry out the piercing and cause insane scar tissue. Neosporin can actually trap bacteria into your piercing and cause it to become more infected. First of all, the most important thing to remember, DON'T PLAY WITH OR MESS WITH YOUR PIERCING!!!!!!!!!!!! Your hands will cause more infection than anything. If your piercing becomes infected, make sure you are using mouthwash after every meal, and when you brush your teeth brush the inside of your piercing with a soft bristled toothbrush VERY GENTLY! DO NOT EVER pick at the drainage/crust on your piercing, wash it gently with warm water and anti-bacterial soap to remove the dried discharge (like Dial), never use a cloth towel bc cloth towels can trap bacteria. Use a sea salt solution, like H2Ocean 3-6 times a day to help promote the removal of discharge and lymph secrections safely. If your piercing becomes badly infected, DO NOT REMOVE THE JEWELRY!!!! If you do, the wound will close up and you risk developing an abscess. The jewelry allows for the drainage of the infection. Warm compressess will encourage the infection to drain as well, works best in combination with the sea salt. If your infection has become severe enough where the lymph nodes in your neck are swollen by more than 2 inches (it happens often) go to the doctor and get on antibiotics asap! This is a dangerous part of your body to have a severe infection. You can calm the infection with antibiotics, warm compresses and sea salt. Just make sure you never remove the jewelry during an anfection, let it drain out and eventually, if you keep up proper care and washing, ESPECIALLY HAND WASHING, your piercing will calm itself and get back to normal.
yes, it is easy for it to get infected. but if you take good care of your piercing, it shouldn't.

Yes, if you get ANY piercing you need to stay out of the water until it is fully healed. With a belly button piercing this means that you may need to refrain from swimming for up to six months. There are some people that can never heal a navel piercing and because of this you need to be very careful no matter how long you have had it. Consult your piercer if you have any further questions. To answer the second part of your question yes it will get infected there are a lot of bodily fluids and mucosa in public pools and you don't know what those fluids and mucosa may carry. When you swim with an open wound you are also putting yourself at risk to contract hepatitis, HIV and other pathogens that transfer in the same way. The likelihood of this happening is very slim, but still a possibility. Another factor with pools is that chlorine will irritate normal (unpierced) skin so with an open wound it will probably become extremely irritated and when a piercing is irritated it can and probably will lead to rejection or migration of the piercing.
