Do not run the engine!

Call out your nearest good car mechanic - or get the vehicle towed to him - and have him drain the fuel tank.

If the amount of diesel is less than petrol, the engine might still run, but it will run poorly.

If the diesel is above the ratio of petrol, it might not run at all.

In either case the petrol engine should be just fine after you have done all this:

  • first, to get rid of the contaminated fuel, empty the tank into jerry cans made to hold fuel
  • then rinse it out at least twice with some clean petrol, again emptying it into fuel jerry cans
  • throw all that contaminated petrol away: take the jerry cans to your town's local "fuel and oil dump". It is highly dangerous - and also illegal - to use your house drainage system or the gutter in your road!
  • Fill the tank with clean petrol.

On the other hand, if petrol is used in a diesel engine that is really bad.

Can unleaded gas be used in a 1966 Ford Mustang?

You can use unleaded in a low compression engine such as the in-line 6 and the 260. But use a high octane unleaded instead of regular unleaded. If however you have the 289, I am not sure on this engine. The 289 HO will require the use of a VSRP additive at each fill up. If your 289 has hardened valve seats and does not require a VSRP additive, you can simply switch to Shell V-Power (98 octane) or Shell Unleaded (95 octane) straight away. If you find that your Mustang tends to run hot then you will need to readjust the fuel/air mixture on the carburetor for the modern unleaded fuel. You can use unleaded in a low compression engine such as the in-line 6 and the 260. What happens if you use Regular unleaded gas in Mercedes ML 500 instead of premium unleaded gas?

You get a lower gas mileage because it needs more fuel at one time to reach the maximum potential, and it still doesn't have very good performance.

Will using regular unleaded instead of premium unleaded damage the engine?

it could, read the owners manual that came with your car. it will say what kind is recommended, the octane levels in gas vary and if you go to low you could cause your engine to knock and soon after blow.

Shall we use unleaded gas instead of leaded gas?

Well, I am not sure where you can even get leaded fuel anymore, BUT even NASCAR went unleaded. the onl reason we used lead was to stop PRE IGN. and with technology of todays additives, they have done that as well with out lead. So YES unleaded is prefered in my thinking. Where are you able to get leaded fuel? in the USA? or are you in another country?

What should you do if you put diesel instead of unleaded?

Do not try to run the engine. Drain and clean the tank. Change any fuel filters. Then try to start.
