Here are some things you should look at if you're having trouble:
- Are you turning off all the distractions? This means NO phone, texting, loud noises in the background, TV, video games, OR internet unless you are actually using the internet to do your homework at that specific moment!
- Are you studying by using your notes instead of trying to read the textbook over and over again? Your notes should contain the basic information -- copy down the headings from the book, then add the information your teacher puts on the board and hands out in class. Use the notes to study.
- Are you doing all your homework? Skipping the homework means you don't understand the material as well and will have trouble studying.
- Are you comfortable? If you're sitting in an uncomfortable chair, slouching instead of sitting properly, in a room that's too cold or too hot, wearing clothes that are too tight or too bunched up -- there are lots of ways to be uncomfortable, but you should get comfortable when studying so you can concentrate.
- Are you getting enough sleep? Teenagers need 10 or more hours every night to be alert and be able to study without getting distracted and sleepy.
If you're doing all of this and are still really struggling, you might ask your teacher and your parents if you can be tested for a condition called Attention Deficit Disorder. This is a pretty common condition that makes it really hard for kids to focus even if they're trying their best. There are medicines that work very well to treat this, too.
