Forge welding is the process of heating to pieces of steel or iron to its molten state and join them by striking them with a hammer.
To forge weld two pieces of steel:
- Round the two pieces of steel where it is to be welded. (Called scarfing)
- Heat the two pieces of steel until the steel is bright red wire brush the area to be welded to remove contaminates from the area to be welded
- Coat the area to be welded with flux. (this seals the area to be welded and prevents oxygen reacting with the area to be welded "20 mule team borax" or clean sand, works well for flux)
- Heat the scarfed flux area until it is in a molten state quickly and lightly tap the two scarf pieces together.
- If everything has been done properly then the two pieces will be welded together. Joint cohesion can reach as high as 98%. Then there are some days when even though you thought that you did everything the dam thing won't stick.
