The global positioning system (GPS) is a series of satellites in orbit around the earth, that can "talk" to any GPS receiver on the ground, and that receiver will show it's location on earth to withing about 20-30 feet in any direction. Also, a particular place one visits (an especially beautiful spot in the woods, for instance) can be stored in the GPS memory, and you can always find your way back to those coordinates exactly again. It has hundreds of uses for regular people, as well as Police, Fire and Emergency personnel.
