x-86 machines means how many bits it can process at a time x86 can process 32bits at one time and a x64 and process 64bits of binary code (1s and 0s) at one time x64 is better faster and can use up to 128 gigs of RAM in vista 64bit machines 32bit or x86 can only reconizes 3 gigs of RAM and is much slower
