Abreva is the brand name of the only OTC medication that actually shortens the life of the cold sore, shortening the life of the cold sore. Other medications tend to treat the cold sore symptomatically, which keeps it clean and helps to prevent infection, but doesn't really shorten the face time of the cold sore. Abreva has been clinically proven, and I use it myself. It works best if you catch it on the first day, the very hour you notice it. It will be gone in less than five days, sometimes as short as three, but ONLY IF YOU DON'T POP IT. Popping a sore, while tempting, opens the wound, and that takes longer to heal, and can also make an entrance for bacteria.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus, and it is in the same family as the chicken-pox virus. The virus goes dormant after the initial infection, and lives in the spinal canal, along nerve roots. Irritants, such as shaving or sunburn, can cause a cold sore to come up. Using a lip balm with sunscreen can be extremely helpful in preventing an outbreak.

Never kiss anyone while you have a cold sore. Direct contact with the fluid inside can cause them to spread.

Nystatin is an antibiotic whereas cold sores are viral. So no use at all. Stick to an antiviral cream such as acyclovir 2%.

How do you take off a cold sore?

To treat cold sores at home, it is important to begin treatments at the first sign of a cold sore. You may not be able to prevent them, but early treatment can drastically reduce the severity of a cold sore. Lysine supplements can help to reduce cold sores. Avoid touching them, sharing cups or utensils, or kissing another person, to avoid spreading the virus. Often, cold sores appear with other illnesses, so treat those, too.
