A small amount of the substance gets airborne, and then end up in your nose. In the nose you have specialized cells, a bit like the taste buds on your tongue, and they will react to this substance and send a message to your brain.

Yes, the nose is how odorants (chemicals, fragrances, etc) are passed through the nasal passages, dissolve in the mucus and are detected by olfactory receptors on the dendrites of the olfactory sensory neurons. The sensory neurons in the nasal cavity transfer the information to the olfactory nerve in the brain.
