What does 'committed to the custody' mean?

In criminal proceedings it usually indicates the judge has placed the convicted person in the custody of the department of corrections or a juvenile facility to begin serving the imposed sentence.

In civil proceedings it means the judge has placed the minor child in the care of a parent(s) or a legal guardian.
