The Army Air Force 1007th Quartermaster Rescue Boat unit rescued air crews of downed planes in the North Atlantic and North Sea. They were assigned to the 3rd Air Force in 1941 - 45. They used boats that were something like the size of the PT boat (74 - 84 feet in length). It was undoubtedly rather hazardous duty due to German aircraft, shore batteries, E-boats, etc.
