- In mathematics a "-" is a minus sign, signifying that the second number should be subtracted form the first number: 5-3=2.

It also identifies a negative number, a number less than zero, such as -5 (minus five).

- In lists, it is a dash, and can mark the beginning of new sections, as it is doing in this answer!

- In language, it is a hyphen and separates the sections of compound words such as father-in-law.

It also separates the numbers in dates and telephone numbers.

It can show connection, such as London-Paris flights, 1963-1997, Yankees won 6-3.

One or two can be used in a sentence to show an interruption.

- In printing, each of these has a different length: minus sign, hyphen, and several kinds of dashes. (An n dash is as wide as an n. An m dash is as wide as an m.)

There are rules for using every one of them!

What is a AED?

An (AED) automated external defibrillator is a device that sends an electric shock to the heart that will restore the natural heart rhythm to the victim during a cardiac arrest.

When the AED electrodes are applied to the victim's chest, it automatically analyzes the heart rhythm and the rescuer is then advised whether a shock is needed to regain a normal heart beat. The heart has been defibrillated when the victim's heart resumes normal beating.

As a verb: to indicate or refer to a particular thing or notion.
As an adjective: to be unwilling to share or give things.

As a noun in math, the mean is another term for what we usually call the average.

The mean is easily found by adding all the numbers together and dividing by the total count, as in :

11, 27, 31, 56, 80

The mean is found to be :

205 ( the sum of all numbers ) / ( divided by ) 5 ( the total count of the numbers in the list ) = 41. [ The mean number of the whole list is 41. ]

A (an) is the indefinite article, indicating a single, non-specific member of a group or set. The plural may be some, but also several, many, or any numerical modifier.

Example : "I saw a man." (any male human)

This is compared to the definite articles (the, this, that, those) which describe a certain member, or one previously referred to.

Example : I saw a bird and the bird was red. (the same bird)
