In 1999 the DVD Forum Steering Committee decreed that DVD, as an international standard, is simply the three letters DVD.
During its creation in the mid-90's, 'Digital Video Disc' was proposed and (by many) assumed, but was quickly replaced with 'Digital Versatile Disc' to underscore the fact that the format could store more than just video files.
The DVD Forum never officially accepted either definition. DVD is just DVD.
Rather than having to say or write Digital Versatile Disc it has been abbreviated to just DVD as it is more commonly known as.
The DVD is a round flat disc similar to the CD, 'Compact Disc' and is placed into the draw compartment of the device it is to be used in. It holds files of information that is converted into sound and picture, whereas the CD only holds files of information that converts to sound.
