GI is a nickname for an US Army soldier.

It stands for 'galvanized iron', stamped in block letters on a large number of field military items in World War I and World War II. Soldiers believed it stands for 'government issue' or even 'general inductee' and began using the acronym for themselves, this usage catching on to the wider public (even as its used vanished in the military).
