It means "Hello/Good day, how are you?"

edit: Actually, konnichiwa literally means 'today' with a subject marker, so 'konnichiwa, ogenki desu ka' would mean (literally) 'How are you today?'

This is how konnichiwa became 'hello/good afternoon', by the way. People kept saying the full sentence until it just became konnichiwa.

In true formal, olden Japanese, saying konnichiwa on its own would be inappropriate, because it would leave the sentence hanging. In English, it would sound something like 'Today,'

You can tell this because the sound 'wa' isn't written わ (wa), but は(ha). The sound ha is pronounced wa when used as a marker (or particle) in a sentence, effectively working as a comma.

Hope all that ^ made sense.

It means "Hello" in Japanese, but I can also mean "Good afternoon."

(There are other ways to say "Good morning" & "Good night" but I'm pretty sure "Konichiwa" can be used as a sort of catch all phrase for "Hello.")

Konnichiwa means Hello or Good afternoon

Ohayou means Good morning or you could sayOhayou gozaimasu to make it formal

Konbanwa means Good evening

Sayonara means Goodbye

And Oyasuminasai means Good night

Although some sources state that the spelling Konichiwameans hello in Japanese, other sources state this is incorrect.

The word "Konnichiwa" (with 2 'N's) is Japanese for "Good Afternoon".

"Konichiwa Records" with one 'n' in "Konnichiwa" is a UK-based record / recording company. Sources state this is a misspelling of the Japanese word.

There is also a song which has Konichiwa as part of the title.

The formal meaning is hello, while the slang/colloquial meaning is good afternoon.

In the old days, it used to be part of a sentence, 'konnichiwa, o genki desu ka' which means 'How are you today?'. The 'wa' particle is only used when then word is in a sentence (it hints at more words in the sentence), but the sentence was too long of a greeting for everyday use, so it became shortened to just konnichiwa, sounding in English like, 'Today,'
Japaneses, it means good evening or good afternoon
