What is an LP in music?In: Music |
Long Play, as it implies, for Long Playing record.
Originally, there were waxed cylinders; then 10 inch discs that were played at 78 rpm.
Two companies issued records that would replace such: One, with the 7 inch 45 rpm; the other, the LP.
There remains a debate if the quality of the LP is better than even CDs.
Also, there are "EP's" or extended plays: which could be 7 inch played at 331/3 rpm;
12 inch played at 45 rpm; or 10 inch at 331/3 or 45 rpm.
LP was a 10 or 12 inch played at 331/3 rpm
LP stands for "long-playing phonograph" which is the same thing as a record. The term has remained the standard name for an album from bands or artists.
Not to be nitpicking, but remember that records,vinyl or otherwise came out long before tapes did, so the term LP was first used to denote that some albums were Long Playing.
