There is the large category called "games", which could be said to be the variety of different ways that people can amuse themselves in contests that are not regarded as work.
"Sports" are then a sub-category of "games", in that they additionally require that it be a contest involving athletic prowess and some verifiable measure of success, such as scoring dependent on an objective standard.
Hence why "figure skating" gets flak as an Olympic "sport". It cannot be truly objectively scored. Hence why "pool" and "foosball" aren't regarded as sports, they require no athletic prowess in the traditional sense.
