prn is a term used by MD's when prescribing medication. It means prescribed as needed. A doctor may write "q 4 hrs. prn" This means you may take it every four hours as needed. You decide if you need it. You may not take it sooner than four hours. Sometimes there's a limit on how many, like "3 qd" this would mean up to 3 per day.

PRN is Latin for "pro re nata", which would mean that a person hired for a specific job will be needed as "circumstances arise", and that he/she will not be subject to a standard or set working schedule.

PRN jobs are as needed. The employee is not guaranteed a schedule or set hours, but rather, works when needed. These employees typically work less than 20 hours a week (or the minimum number of hours to be considered "part time" in that position) and do not receive benefits from the company. PRN rates are higher than typical part time and full time rates due to the lack of benefits and lack of structured schedule and hours.

In medicine, "PRN" means "as needed". It could also mean Professional Registered Nurse. Most of the time it means Paramedic-RN (Registered Nurse) which is what I'm going to school to be.

Is the nursing field really a good field to go in with this economy or should you consider something else?

The nursing field is a fine and noble field of work that is largely independent of issues of economy. As long as there are people, there will be a need for nursing. A better thing to consider is whether nursing is a good fit for you. Nursing is hard physical, emotional, exacting and yet heroic work. You should go into nursing if you are compassionate and sensitive to other people's condition, and truly want to help. Nursing is not for those with weak minds, backs or constitutions.
