What is Phobos like?

Phobos and Deimos were Greek gods, the sons of Ares and Aphrodite; Mars is (after all) the Roman name for Ares. Phobos literally means fear (same root as the word 'phobia') and deimos means dread (from which the word 'demon' is derived). Inauspicious names for moons, if you ask me, but early astronomers had an affinity for using Greek gods to name astronomical objects, probably a nod to the ancient Greek's practice of placing mythological figures in constellations.

It's about 26 kilometers at its widest, so it's very small. It's oddly shaped, and the very small amount of gravity can vary. It is only about 6 or 7 miles above Mars, and orbits it very fast.

It may be very porous, and may have frozen water in it. There may be possible uses for it as an observatory or way station.

It's escape velocity is about 24 miles per hour, so while you could probably not run off of it, you could probably bicycle yourself into orbit with an appropriate ramp!
